Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do. There are a few ways that groups or individuals can support United for Literacy by volunteering at our events. We have online opportunities to help us plan for upcoming events. We also have onsite opportunities for our in-person events, including Game Night for Literacy held in Toronto, in March, and other community events in the spring and summer. We invite you to consider the many opportunities to get involved: 

• Single-day volunteering: Have a small group of employees (10-15 people) take part in a Book Day. The group will help to sort and pack books we receive from our national publishing partners. These books are distributed to children across Canada to encourage a love of reading. This is a great introduction to United for Literacy and provides meaningful support. 
• Volunteer tutoring: Become a literacy tutor and help children, youth, or adults gain essential skills. Employees who want to make a lasting contribution to literacy can volunteer to tutor.  Tutors take part in training (2-6 hours) and volunteer for around 2 hours per week. There are opportunities to work with children, youth, and adults. Tutoring happens online and/or in person. No teaching experience is needed.  
  Volunteers are the heartbeat of our literacy services. Each year, over 1,500 volunteers give thousands of hours to United for Literacy. They tutor math, reading, and writing; read stories at our Reading Tents; help with special events; and more. We are always looking for more people to volunteer with us. • Corporate Homework Club: Host a Corporate Homework Club in your office. Support literacy by hosting a Corporate Homework Club. This is a partnership between a corporation, a local school, and United for Literacy. The business provides funding and space. Employees serve as tutors. Teachers refer students (Grade 7+) who need support. United for Literacy staff oversee the program.  This model gives youth from diverse communities the chance to be in a corporate space. Students get homework help along with informal coaching and mentorship. This opportunity has a deep and lasting impact. 
• Share expertise: Share knowledge and professional advice Support projects like app development to advance literacy tools. You can support United for Literacy by helping us prepare and plan for upcoming events, such as Game Night for Literacy. • Or participate in the bookshelf Campaign

Invite your colleagues, clients, or community to make a difference.

From September to November, help us raise funds for children's literacy programs. For every $25 donation, a child receives learning materials and literacy support. Donors get a charitable tax receipt and a book decal to personalize and add to your organization's bookshelf display.

It’s simple:

1. Register your company before August 15th and Fill a Bookshelf. 
2. Help us raise funds from September to November.* 
3. Encourage your colleagues to donate. Every $25 donation gives a child learning materials and support. All donors receive a charitable tax receipt.
4. Give the donor a book decal for each $25 gift. Have them write their name on it and stick it on the decal bookshelf, which you can post on a wall in your office.
