Celebrating Literacy and Learner Success: Tricia Sandy Wins the 2025 Learner Achievement Award

Apr. 03 2025

We are proud to present the 2025 Learner Achievement Award to a truly inspiring person: Tricia Sandy.

A Learning Journey of Dedication and Growth

Tricia joined the Independent Studies program at United for Literacy in 2020, just before the pandemic. Independant Studies supports adults with learning challenges, offering personalized guidance to help them achieve their goals. Despite the difficulties of the past few years, Tricia’s hard work and dedication have led to remarkable progress.

Since starting the program, Tricia has made significant improvements in her reading skills. Tasks that once felt overwhelming are now much easier. One of her biggest achievements is gaining confidence with money; what was once a challenge is now a source of independence. She can shop for her family with ease, a milestone that reflects her growth.

The Power of Support and Perseverance

Her success extends beyond academics. Tricia loves reading with her daughter, Sophia, and looks forward to sharing her love of books with others. Her journey shows how learning can open doors and bring families closer together.

Although her tutor, Sharon, could not attend our event in person, she shared a heartfelt video message celebrating Tricia’s achievements. "You have shown that a willingness to work hard and a determination to succeed can lead to great results in many tasks," Sharon said. She also had a special message for Sophia, Tricia’s daughter: "You were the inspiration for your mom to come to United for Literacy, and you’ve also benefited from her efforts and successes. I wish you and your mom many, many hours of reading pleasure together in the future."

Sharon’s support has been an important part of Tricia’s learning journey, but it is Tricia’s perseverance and commitment that have brought her this far.

Tricia had the chance to give a speech during Game Night. Her story was so moving that there wasn’t a dry eye in the audience.

How the Independent Studies Program Makes a Difference

The Independent Studies program provides adult literacy support for individuals with mild intellectual disabilities. Learners work on improving reading, writing, numeracy, computer skills, and communication. With the help of trained volunteer tutors, participants build confidence and independence to pursue educational, employment, and life opportunities.

If you or someone you know could benefit from this program, we're here to help. Reach out to your regional representative or visit our programs page to find the best fit for your needs.
